Sarah Wilson Link to home page : Sarah Wilson Biography: Sarah Wilson’s music is an “improviser’s dream,” says internationally acclaimed composer/pianist Myra Melford. Her music is “rich with suggestion and possibility: ebullient and tender, poignant and humorous.”
Wilson’s compositions reflect a deep understanding of the connection between images and motion. Grammy Award nominee Dave Douglas, composer/trumpeter, commends Wilson’s development of a “new music,” which evokes the theatrical. Her techniques of “orchestrating tightly wound counterpoint” with a “fresh, unexpected approach to rhythm” summon the imagination.
Composer/trumpeter Sarah Wilson grew up in Healdsburg, California, received a BA in Anthropology from UC Berkeley and left to spend 14 years on the east coast. After touring internationally with Bread and Puppet Theater based in VT, she moved to New York City for 12 years and became an active fixture in the downtown music scene. She returned to the SF Bay Area in fall 2005 and leads projects featuring musicians including Scott Amendola, Will Bernard, Ben Goldberg, Devin Hoff, John Schott and Ches Smith.

Her 2006 Evander Music release, “Music for an imaginary play” features: Sarah on trumpet and vocals; co-producer Steve Cardenas (Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, Joey Baron, Slide Hampton) on electric guitar; Peck Allmond (M’Shell N’Degeocello, Don Cherry, Oliver Lake) on tenor sax; Jerome Harris (Paul Motian, Sonny Rollins, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell) on bass; and Kenny Wollesen (Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Norah Jones, Tom Waits) on drums.
Sarah continues to work intensively as a composer and trumpeter with numerous bands led by Kenny Wollesen. Her compositions have been performed at numerous NYC festivals including the 2006 River to River Festival and Celebrate Brooklyn in July 2005. Musicians including Bill Frisell, Chris Potter, Tony Scherr and others have recorded her tunes for Wollesen’s projects. Known for her work as musical director and composer of the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival’s annual giant puppet spectacle for six years, Wilson has composed music for numerous theater and film projects. Additionally, she composed music for the American Museum of Natural History’s “Body Art” exhibit from 1999-2000.
